About Shetland

The Shetland Islands – of which there are more than 100 – is a bustling archipelago of 22,000 people boasting abundant wildlife, a spectacular coastline and dozens of major archaeological sites.

The discovery of North Sea Oil off Shetland in the 1970s has been a key event in the islands' recent history. A pioneering Act of Parliament – the Zetland County Council Act - gave reserve powers to Shetland Islands Council (SIC) in its dealing with the oil industry. This gave the SIC considerable control over developments and provided the basis on which the Council’s financial strength and extended levels of service provision to the population of Shetland were established.

The organisers of Energy From The Edge look forward to welcoming delegates from all over the world to the Shetland Islands.
