EnergyFromTheEdge
A conference about sustainable energy, large-scale resource development in remote communities, and more ...
12-14 SEPTEMBER 2007 Shetland Islands
Background
In December 2006, the Shetland Islands Council agreed to host the “Energy from the Edge” International Conference to be held in the autumn of 2007.
This decision was made as a result of two separate approaches for Shetland to host a conference or symposium – one from the Nordic Task Force for Energy Supply in Sparsely populated areas and the second from the North Atlantic Forum, based in Prince Edward Island.
The approach by the North Atlantic Forum followed a desire to hold the 5th bi-annual conference on the Eastern side of the Atlantic. At a North Atlantic Conference in Twillingate, Newfoundland in 2005, Shetland was suggested as a possible venue for 2007.
The approach by the Task Force was the result of a decision made by the Nordic Council of Ministers for Energy to investigate the possibilities for an enlarged co-operation on energy issues with Shetland and Canada. The Task Force held their meeting in Lerwick, Shetland in October 2006 and during their stay met with relevant officials and organisations. The interest in establishing cooperation was mutual and the decision was made to join forces in planning and implementing a North Atlantic Symposium on renewable energy.
Since NAF (and their partners NORA and ISSMR) were also interested in renewable energy as a conference theme, it was agreed to run two events back to back and with some overlap so as to enhance opportunities for collaboration.
Therefore, both the symposium and NAF/NORA/ISSMR conference are being branded as “Energy From the Edge” events. However, please note that there is a separate planning group for the symposium, which is for invited participants only.
More information the symposium
The week of events, which is being co-ordinated by the Economic Development Unit of Shetland Islands Council, will involve participants from throughout the North Atlantic and North European Regions – including from Canada, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe, Åland, Isle of Man, Shetland and the rest of Scotland and UK.
It is hoped that the international symposium and conference will help maximise Shetland’s potential at the crossroads of the North Atlantic as well as strengthening our reputation as a distinctive conference venue.
